Wondering how to get from Colombo airport to Sigiriya? When arriving in Sri Lanka from abroad, you will most likely do so by airplane. Bandaranaike International Airport, also known as Colombo Airport, is located 20 miles north of Colombo and is the largest airport in Sri Lanka.
Every year around 66 thousand airplanes arrive or depart from it, carrying more than 10 million passengers to or from the island.
The ancient city of Sigiriya is one of the must-see places in Sri Lanka. Today it is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and one of the most important monuments of the ancient Sinhalese civilization.
It was constructed in the 5th century AD, on top of the 200 meters high rock.
Because of the huge statue of a lion, which formed the main gate to the citadel on its top, this rock today is called Sinhagiri or Lion Rock. Or this statue today remains only the front paws which straddle the gate on both sides.
The Lion Rock is surrounded by a complex of gardens, pools, and water tanks. Many of the pools are interconnected by underground water lines, of which many are still functional.
Some of the pools have limestone fountains, and particularly during the wet season, they become active, as the water arrives in them from the nearby tank by these underground lines.
